“We are committed to disconnecting a certain number of Russian banks from SWIFT. This will stop their operations around the world and effectively block Russian exports and imports,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a Twitter statement. Western countries continue to work on the list of banks that will be disconnected from SWIFT.
The decision was made following negotiations between the United States, France, Canada, Italy, Great Britain, the EC and Germany. The German government announced that “all Russian banks that have already fallen under the sanctions of the international community, and, if necessary, other Russian banks” will be disconnected from SWIFT.
